Portal to Houston's Art Community

I took several of the recent image posts at the Bayou City Art Festival. The on site public relations chair asked me to thank vendor artists, other volunteers and customers and said I could hand out business card/flyers if I wanted to.

I emailed about the content, but specifically chose portraits, which does not really compete with artists selling work at festivals in general – except in the sense money and wall space is scarce. Most art at art festivals is not made to order, and is not custom portraiture.

The images I took emphasize crowds and is hopefully in the best tradition of Renior at the picnics, photo-journalism and documentary – but taken in the digital darkroom into my own style.

Evidently, I caused quite a stir and more senior festival representatives have asked me to have these not for sale. Consequently, I am stopping work on the portfolio – I had about 10 maybe 12 more images to do, and this portfolio is not for sale - the images specifically taken at the park - the portraits on the bus are for sale. These senior members of the festival staff made the request a) before checking the situation fully and b) before they saw the work.

Another consequence of the actions of the more senior members of the festival is I have lost a lot of respect for them. Despite their donating over $100k to support the arts last year, my experience with them is bad. I do not feel supported, rather I quite feel offended and that they are acting as a censor and are not backing up the actions of their staff. Usually a symptom of bad management practice.

Despite, not being for sale, if one of the images is identifiably of you I will give you one “proof” copy on 8.5x11 paper. When thanking people for their participation at the festival and handing them a flyer I said I might have something for you in a couple of days – meaning a free proof. It was my option which image to take to final and given the above this is it.
