I went exploring around the town of Arezzo on Friday to check out the art scene and to visit many galleries.
What I found out was that there are a few underground galleries that are trying out new ways to break free from the traditional roots and emerging into a interesting level in the contemporary arts world. But I did not see many contemporary art galleries here. I suppose that in Europe the demand for traditional art is much more than the contemporary art. When I asked the local artists what they enjoyed painting they would always reply both. Both in the sense that for fun and pleasure they enjoy painting abstract and expressive painting but usaully the demand here was to paint in this 16 century style of classical painting. It is what tourist and local want to buy. They had no problems whipping out both types of paintings. They are all very much knowledgable in both.
So back to the story. The first stop I took was at the Contemporary Arts Museum in Arezzo. It is located right next to Piero della Franchescas famous and beautiful mural in the church called Basilica of San Francesco. It is a must see stop as well. The contemporary arts museum it is free and sits on the 2 and 3 floor of the building. In size, it is small, as is much in Europe but it was adequate space for all. Look for pics coming soon on the museum. Next stop was to have a coffee right across from the museum where they had a exhibit of Pina Martini Salvi, a local artist who paint expessionistic with high intense color. After I went to the many underground exhibits that are only around for a short period of time and you basically had to hunt for them because they where not in one fixed place everytime.I am only sorry that I did not arrive on the 1st Sunday of the month because during that time Arezzo becomes so alive with art. Artisans, artist and collectors come from all over Italy on that day to what is called Fiera Antiquaria di Arezzo, or in english antique fair of Arezzo. All the artist gather and even the community gets involved showning pieces in the town hall. There are a few more exhibits that I want to stop by and see just before I go back to Houston but I could not manage to do all in just one day. Until the next exhibit Arriverderci!
