It's Complicated
About Me:
I am a mixed-media, multi-visual creative Spirit; with a constant focus on sculpture, installation, and performance art. My goal is to promote the ideal of a striving artist; and not the cliché’ of a starving artist. My aim is become more nationally, as well as internationally, recognized in what I do and who I am as a creative entity. I seek to create works of art that are both complex but yet simple at the same time. I endeavor my work to provoke questioning; which is an integral for proper viewing of art. And I believe my new style, URBAN EXPRESSIONISM [now published on Urban Dictionary (dot) com], allows me to be that; both spontaneous and playful, and at the same time serious and precise, with my work. Ideas and words come to me- and many do- in thought particles that are constantly floating in my space. In the feverish play of words where I exist, my mind opens up to receive these particles of thought. As they come to me I play with them, change them; wondering if they are actual words, signs, and symbols. Some are real, but most are not; which I possess and store into my own language library. Then, I let my connection with the Spirit flow through the work. The result is both rhythmically and spiritually flowing in nature. The approaches, as well as the work and the results, are rhythmically disjointed like jazz notes; to make the flow resonate into your soul- your true essence. Spiritually speaking, the work is not only Modern and Contemporary in aesthetics- which is only scratching the surface deep; but also the context of the work is from Christian concepts, symbolism, and sensibility. Although, my affinities are rooted in the Classical and Traditional aspects of art, the appeal of the Modern and Contemporary has been fused into it to make the rhythmical and the spiritual more pronounced; like an adverb- Proverb. Things are etched or scratched out to invoke feeling of intuitive knowing and investigation. There is purity and truth that solely lay within the traditions and classics; but it can also be expressed within the Modern; the Contemporary. So, I endeavor to show this purity and truth in this era- my time. And I believe my time is now.

"Patten’s URBAN EXPRESSIONISM-copyright 2002 style although definitely abstract and modern is anything but vague. There is no denying the message of his work: maybe art is pretension and a sham but the artist is not a sham. It is a sentiment that one can readily believe in when faced with the true nature of a disposable, consumer society. Nothing is real any more so why should art be? And yet Patten strives to confront the viewer with what is real to him, his belief in God, his opinion of how the exploitation of sex, politics, and trend complicates modern society; and his memories of growing up as a person of color in a color-oriented society.....".–Tomas Sustaita; poet, writer, critic.

I believe that a work of art should possess an exisitential nature that reaches far beyond the aesthetic plane. Therefore, the works of art that I create are initiated and executed with a passionate and more viable sense that substantiates this existence and meaning. I strongly believe that passion is the integral part in this process. I also believe that passion validates the viability of the work of art. Instead of contemplating and rationalizing a work of art AFTER I've gone through the process- as many artists do- I seek to create from the initial spark of inspiration that encourages the work. As Jack Kerouac stated, "To edit is a sin;" so I say that to rationalize afterwards is a sin and mockery to the spirit which resides within the work of art. This is the driving force behind my art; especially, the abstraction; the expression. In saying this, it is my hope to encourage the viewer of art- especially, my art- to see in a way that perhaps they have never seen before...to ask question and to feel....

Thank you for your time in reading.

Friday and Saturday I'm quite busy, going out of town next week. But perhaps the week after that we can try it again. I brought a friend with me yesterday she says she know you.

Thanks, Dune. I hope we can get out and crawl around this weekend. I am making Greek bread for the family Thanksgiving dinner, so I am going to be in the kitchen for a while. Glad to see things are going so well for you. Best wishes,
Christine
