Born in Birmingham, UK. Maria began her art studies in 1970 at the Bournville School of Art. She then went on to study Fashion/costume and Textiles, but later resumed her studies of fine arts at the BIAD - University of Central England.
Throughout her long career as an artist, Maria has worked with arts community based projects and taught a range of art subjects. Since graduating with Honours from The University of Central England in 1999, she has developed her working practises within a broader context such as: Paintings, Textiles and 3D.
Maria draws her inspiration from many different sources: Travel, Literature, People, Tradition and more personal issues. She documents her subject through photography and drawings.
Her more recent body of work is inspired by her own cultural heritage, including her travels through Africa and the diverse African culture and more recently a month long residency that took place in Nairobi, Kenya.
Her use of colours are vibrant and exciting her paintings aesthetically pleasing with interesting narratives.
Although Maria is now based in the UK and Greece she has previously lived solely abroad, leaving the UK to live in West Africa on two occasions.
Her experiences of Africa are not just as a traveller but also as a resident, living with the people and their culture as an African.
Her own colourful diverse family heritage (African Father, Italian Mother) inspires her work and working practises.
Maria is a freelance artist working from her studio in the UK and also Greece. She is also a Visiting Lecturer at the Walsall college of Art teaching Drawing, Painting, Printmaking and Contextual Studies

Sounds very interesting with Africa, I have never been but will go one day soon.
I visit Morocco from time to time since I live very nearby ( I live in Marbella, Spain).
Yes 16th of September i have a 2 week show in Puerto Banus/Marbella, its a large installation with prints, photos, sculptures, sound, video and plywood people painted 1:1 scale based on photos.
The idea is to show a portray of the people that you meet on the street every day and if this is what we want then thats what we get.
2009 so far I will show in Boston, Ft Myers and Los Angeles in The USA.
If you have some tips of how and where to travel around in Africa let me know when you have time to write
