About Me:
I was told that I was drawing before I could walk. I have memories of spending endless hours creating these grand scenes with any medium in my reach. This kind of creative frenzy came to me so naturally, that my parents knew this could only be enhanced with some special art classes that I took at the Museum of Fine Arts, where I grew up - Cincinnati, Ohio.
When it came time to enter college, I attended the University of Cincinnati as a Fine Arts major, and quickly learned that painting with oils was my favorite form of expression.
After a few years in college, some life changes and a move to Florida, I later migrated with my new family to Texas. The influence of this part of the country could only have an escalating effect on my art.
Over the years I have developed many reasons for each series that I have produced, but none have been so meaningful as this current stream of paintings that began after a trip into Mexico about 8 years ago. This is where my life took on new meaning and my art could only follow the path.

Dividing the Mother

Like a deep cut made
into soft brown skin -
an intrusive,
unnatural object,
breaking the flow,
moving through the center
of Her large ancient being.
Soil scraped away -
plants, animals, human beings,
separated...
removed...
the Earth emitting Her deepest parts,
secrets hidden for millenniums,
unseen layers and unfamiliar smells,
with outstretched skirts,
an unholy penetration,
a violent act -
as She lays still
in Her infinite patience,
Her warm center -
the heart of all hearts,
Her steady, life-giving embrace...
wise soul, constant Mother...
slowly bleeding.

Hi Kay,
I thought I left a comment for you and then I realized I hadn't signed in. Is that like hanging a painting upside down? LOL
I posted my poem yesterday but realized it was a .docx which most people would not be able to print. So Sarah taught me how to delete and suggested I bring copies for class. Which I will do..How are you?

Thank you, Kay, for your wonderful words. Sorry I'd been MIA for a while and only just saw them. But you'd been on my mind recently, too. I was telling some fellow artists about your work, and how you manage to bring such honor, emotion and beauty to our people. i'm sure i mentioned it before, but i couldn't help but share the word. :)

and i know what you mean about the "spiritual" part. ;) i see it in your work, too. keep on doing what you do because you do it so well.

Thirst

Long hours to walk,
no landmarks, no signs -
a dry heat so penetrating,
clear thinking evaporates,
moist skin becomes leather,
tones of a human voice
drift into the layers
of sand and rock below their feet.

“I will send money, mama...
do not worry” he sees his words.
“We will make it, we will get to the other side.”
He tries to swallow and sees her sitting on the ground.
Her belly seems larger,
her hands look limp,
she leans against a scraggly tree
and he knows she cannot get up again.

We have a show up called "If the Shoe Fits" - Peggy Sexton and Joan Son have done an excellent collaboration on the subject of shoes... it is well worth taking in.
Come to see and enjoy.
Also, Archway is moving in September to a new location. You may remember where Mind Puddles used to be on Dunlavy? That is our new space... three times the size of where we are now. We are happy to make the move! Instead of 15 artists - there will be 30... very exciting group of some of Houston's finest local artists.
Also, lots of opportunity for the art community as well,as we plan out next year for guest artists, juried and group shows.

Indeed! There was a constant and generous flow of admirers throughout the evening. Great mood. Everyone seemed excited and several red dots to boot.
