An Interesting read re: MFA's and the art market

An MFA will not make you an artist. It will give you a community of peers and two or three years to learn a little more about this profession. It gives you degree that allows you to teach in a 4 year…

Expectations

Just because people expect you to do the same thing does not mean you must, unless you don't know how to do anything else. This profession is about Freedom not boredom.

In my craft or sullen art ....Dylan Thomas.

In my craft or sullen art
Exercised in the still night
When only the moon rages
And the lovers lie abed
With all their griefs in their arms,
I labour by singing light
Not for ambition or bread
Or the strut and trade of charms
On the ivory stages
But for the common wages
Of their most secret heart.

Not for the proud man apart
From the raging moon I write
On these spindrift pages
Nor for the towering dead
With their nightingales and psalms
But for the lovers, their arms
Round the griefs of the ag… Continue

A quote from Rilke: Letters to a Young Artist

Go into yourself and test the deeps in which your life takes rise; at its source you will find the answer to the question whether you must create. Accept it, just as it sounds, without inquiring into it. Perhaps it will turn out that you are called to be an artist. Then take that destiny upon yourself and bear it, its burden and its greatness, without ever asking what recompense might come from outside.

Dear Earl,

Good to hear from you. Send your invitation to manofhoy@cox.net. I sure would like to make it.

My story . . .there probably isn't enough text space for it here. I'll try to keep it brief. I work for a stone contractor in LV. My job is to figure out what a project will cost, send out a proposal, land the project, and then more or less manage it. I work on stone and tile projects in hotels and casinos. I have been doing this type of work for the last 7 yrs and prior to that I was selling stone and tile for 7 years. I always wanted to live in the west, when the opportunity came, out I went. My wife and I love the outdoors and we spend a lot of time backpacking in it. I also continue to rock climb, this marks my 29th year.

I have never stopped dreaming. I have gone into hibernation a few times. I continue my ceramics, drawings, printmaking. I am spending more time in my studio now than I ever have, even with a full-time job. Health insurance is a plus and I am 58 for goodness sake. I am in damn good condition and trying to keep it that way.

I am not actively selling work, though I sold a few works in 2008. Got one of my pots in a 2 year exhibit in LV and they even paid me an honorarium to exhibit it.

I married my 2nd wife Mary in 1995. I have two sons and 3 grandchildren.

Life is good as long as I can make art.

All the best,

Marc

Some of my work is being exhibited next door at the H Gallery. In March there will be a show of my stuff - heavy metal.

Hope the new year is going well.
